THE HEALING BENEFITS OF MASSAGE

Wright-Now-Wellness, located in Richmond, Virginia offers many types of Massage Therapy. Massage therapy is one of the oldest healing arts. Chinese records dating back 3,000 years document its use; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians all applied forms of massage for many ailments; and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems.

Today, we recognize that the benefits of massage therapy are varied and far-reaching. It is not only an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs but massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic conditions. Research over the past couple of years has found that massage therapy  boosts immune function in women with breast cancer, improves symptoms in children with asthma, and increases grip strength in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

New research is also starting to reveal just what happens in the body after a massage. While there have long been theories about how massage works—from releasing toxins to improving circulation—those have been fairly nebulous, with little hard evidence. Now, one study, for example, found that a single, 45-minute massage led to a small reduction in the level of cortisol, a stress hormone, in the blood, a decrease in cytokine proteins related to inflammation and allergic reactions, and a boost in white blood cells that fight infection.

TYPES OF MASSAGE OFFERED BY WRIGHT NOW WELLNESS

  • Deep Tissue Massage concentrates on the deep layers of muscle and fascia in the body and is recommended by many doctors as a treatment option. By using deep finger pressure and slow, firm strokes, deep tissue massage is effective in treating a variety of physical ailments and relieving chronic muscle tension.
  • Swedish Massage is the most common and best-known type of massage in the West. It is a perfect first massage or if you don’t get massages regularly. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain and joint stiffness while boosting the immune system by decreasing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
  • Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing method that involves applying pressure to certain meridian points on the body to relieve pain. Acupuncture and Acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture uses needles, while Acupressure uses the gentle but firm pressure of hands. Acupressure focuses on relieving pain, discomfort and tension.
  • Pregnancy Massage prepares your body for delivery by helping to increase elasticity and range of motion in the joints and muscles associated with childbirth.  Pregnancy massage also helps to increase the blood flow in the legs, which helps to reduce the chances of edema, varicose veins and blood clots.

Couples Massage: Any of the above massage arts are available as a Couples Massage as well and make for a great addition to any couples therapy session.
